This one needs no script at all: Google Sheets can already email you when a sheet changes. It’s buried in a menu, so most people never find it. The agent version is for when you only care about one column, like a status field.
Open the notification settings
Open the spreadsheet on a computer. In the menu, click Tools, then Notification settings, then Edit notifications.
Choose what to watch
Under Notify me at your Gmail address when, pick Any changes are made.
Choose how often
Pick Email - right away to hear about each change, or Email - daily digest for one summary a day. Click Save.
Paste this into Claude Code, Codex or any coding agent. The agent writes and sets up the automation, then tells you what to click.
Google Sheets' built-in notifications tell me about every change. I only want an email when specific cells change. Write a Google Apps Script bound to my spreadsheet that: - emails me when any cell in the column or range <DESCRIBE IT, e.g. "column D, Status"> changes, with the row's key value, the old value, the new value, and who changed it (if available); - batches changes made within 10 minutes into one email instead of one per cell; - uses an installable on-edit trigger, with a function to set it up and one to remove it. Explain how to add it from the sheet's Extensions menu and what to click.
You still need to
- Tell the agent which column or range matters.
- Open the sheet's Extensions menu and paste what the agent gives you.
Things that trip people up
- You're never notified about your own edits.
- Only editors see who made a change; people with view access get the alert without names.
- The settings only work for the person who sets them up. Everyone who wants alerts sets their own.
